MUNICIPAL COURTS IN KANAWHA COUNTY

Throughout West Virginia, Municipal Courts essentially handle cases involving city ordinance violations. These are limited jurisdiction courts, and the examples of violations heard in these courts include traffic, assault and battery, disorderly conduct, vandalism, loitering, theft, shoplifting, building code and fire code. The current judge of the Charleston Municipal Court is Judge Anne B. Charnock. You can contact the clerk by calling (304) 348-8079. The court is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

KANAWHA COUNTY MAGISTRATE COURT

Aside from the Municipal Courts, most civil litigation matters will begin at the Magistrate Court in Kanawha County. Also known as “People’s Courts,” the Magistrate Court handles misdemeanor cases, preliminary felony cases, and civil arguments with $5,000 or less in dispute.

In Kanawha County, there are 10 different Magistrates providing jurisdiction over the entire county. To contact any of the magistrates, you can contact the Magistrate Court Clerk, Agnes D. Riffel, at 304-357-0422.

KANAWHA COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

The Kanawha County Circuit Court has jurisdiction over all civil cases involving more than $2,500 with limited exceptions. As a personal injury law attorney, Charles M. Love IV works extensively in these courts. The Circuit Court also handles any cases involving equity law as well as writs of habeas corpus, mandamus, quo warranto, prohibition, and certiorari.

SUPREME COURT OF APPEALS

The highest court in West Virginia is the Supreme Court of Appeals. If someone were to lose a civil case in the Kanawha County Circuit Court, they have the right to appeal the case to the Supreme Court. To contact the Supreme Court of Appeals, it is best to go through the Supreme Court Clerk’s Office, located at:
