MUNICIPAL COURTS IN KANAWHA COUNTY

Throughout West Virginia, Municipal Courts essentially handle cases involving city ordinance violations. These are limited jurisdiction courts, and the examples of violations heard in these courts include traffic, assault and battery, disorderly conduct, vandalism, loitering, theft, shoplifting, building code and fire code. KANAWHA COUNTY MAGISTRATE COURT

Aside from the Municipal Courts, most civil litigation matters will begin at the Magistrate Court in Kanawha County. Also known as “People’s Courts,” the Magistrate Court handles misdemeanor cases, preliminary felony cases, and civil arguments with $5,000 or less in dispute.

KANAWHA COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

The Kanawha County Circuit Court has jurisdiction over all civil cases involving more than $2,500 with limited exceptions. As a personal injury law attorney, Charles M. The highest court in West Virginia is the Supreme Court of Appeals. If someone were to lose a civil case in the Kanawha County Circuit Court, they have the right to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.
