Rollover Accidents
Rollover Accidents
Overview
Vehicular accidents are one of the leading causes of death in The Mountain State. Rollover accidents are one of the most frequent causes of fatal car accidents in West Virginia. Many of those fatalities were drivers and passengers who were not wearing seat belts or other restraints at the time of the accident. Alcohol is frequently a contributing factor.
A rollover accident happens when a vehicle tips onto its side or flips onto its roof. It may stop on the side or roll more than once, depending on the force of the crash and other factors. They most commonly occur in single-vehicle accidents but can also happen in multiple-vehicle crashes as well. SUVs and other top-heavy vehicles are particularly susceptible to rollovers.
HOW ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS HAPPEN
Rollover crashes cause more fatalities than any other type. In West Virginia, drug use is frequently seen in rollovers and other types of crashes. Several things can trigger a rollover accident:
• Tripping, in which the vehicle’s tire strikes something that causes it to be off-balanced and unable to recover. This can be a curb, a ditch, or another large object that causes it to shift the vehicle’s weight to one side and lead it to roll onto its side.
• A crash in which the force from another vehicle causes a vehicle to tip over and roll.
• Speeding while turning or on a curve can also cause the vehicle’s tires to lose their grip on the road and tip or rollover. On a two-lane road, rolling over can also mean off the road and a long way before the vehicle stops moving.
• The design of the vehicle, especially if it’s top-heavy with a high center of gravity, like an SUV.
• Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol that impairs a driver’s judgment and motor skills.
• Weather conditions that leave the roads wet and slick and make it easier for the driver to lose control, slide off the road, and roll the vehicle.
The violent nature of a rollover can quickly cause a myriad of serious injuries, especially if you’re not wearing a seatbelt. The chances of survival in a rollover crash are roughly 50%. Most people in a rollover aren’t wearing a seatbelt, making it very difficult to survive.
Aftermath
In the aftermath of the accidents, the repercussions extend far beyond the initial collision. Victims and their families often face:
1. Severe Injuries: Rollover accidents commonly result in traumatic injuries such as spinal cord damage, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple fractures, leading to long-term disabilities and rehabilitation needs.
2. Emotional Trauma: Survivors may experience psychological distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, requiring professional counseling and support.
3. Financial Burden: Medical expenses, lost wages, vehicle repair costs, and legal fees associated with rollover accidents can place an overwhelming financial strain on individuals and their families.
4. Loss of Life: Tragically, many rollover accidents in West Virginia result in fatalities, leaving families devastated and communities mourning the loss of loved ones.
Because rollover accidents are much more dangerous, the consequences are equally debilitating.
