Bad Weather Increases Slip and Fall Accidents

Winter weather is still here in West Virginia, and spring is not right around the corner. Until then, it’s important to be on guard for the higher risk of slip and fall accidents in Charleston.

slip and fall during winter

West Virginia’s winters are cold and snowy we can see low 30s in the daytime and in the teens after nightfall. Snow can be anything from light flurries to blizzards, along with nor’easters that bring high winds and big snowfalls. The Mountain State can also have other winter conditions such as freezing rain, sleet, and other winter precipitation. Preparation is important for our winter weather conditions, including precautions to stay safe during these cold and dangerous conditions.

How It Happens

Bad weather, especially in winter, increases the risk of slip and fall accidents. Rain, sleet, snow, and ice turn any sidewalk or pavement into a dangerous test of dexterity. These surfaces turn slick and slippery making a simple walk hazardous to everyone. Iced-over areas are difficult to maintain one’s traction, balance, and stability when walking, no matter their age.

Even without freezing, accumulated rainwater creates puddles and makes many areas slippery. Anywhere water can accumulate makes walking difficult and increases the risks of a slip and fall, inside or outside. Going into a retail store, shopping mall, restaurant, or even a coffee shop can mean wet floors from people going in and out during rain or snow. Employees may not be able to clear the water up fast enough to prevent slips and falls.

Bad winter weather also makes it difficult for pedestrians to see and navigate around these hazards. Poor visibility during heavy rains or snow makes it more difficult to see obstacles in your path. Ice patches, uneven pavements, and other obstacles are even more dangerous when you can’t see them, increasing your risk of a slip-and-fall accident.

Take Precautions In Bad Weather

Slip and fall accidents are, at best, embarrassing. At worst, you can suffer serious injuries, such as arm, hip, or other bone fractures, or even head trauma. Before venturing out in bad weather, there are a few things you can do to prevent a slip and fall, such as:

• Plan ahead and around the weather

• Wear appropriate footwear with good traction, such as snowshoe boots with good traction for wet and slick conditions

• Dress for the weather in layers for “padding” to protect you in a slip and fall

• Avoid walking on slick or slippery surfaces if possible

• Walk slower than normal with smaller steps and a steady pace, but not running, brisk walking, or sudden changes in direction

• Be mindful of your surroundings, particularly when approaching slick or slippery surfaces

• Use handrails or other supports when available, especially over the age of 65

• Pay attention to your surroundings

• Stay in well-lit areas, and use walkways that are well-kept and maintained

• Avoid using your cell phone or other distractions while walking

• Keep your hands free; wear gloves or mittens instead of putting your hands in your pockets to catch yourself if you do slip

Even though the risk of a slip and fall is much higher in bad winter weather, you can minimize your risk of injury before you leave home.
