The city also has several commercial properties in excess of 80 years old. But even with big-city amenities, Charleston’s downtown areas are easy to walk or bike. The area is modern, traditional, and small-town comfortable all at the same time. From a visit to the Capital Building, along Capital Street, and into the Kanawha State Forest, Charleston offers a variety of options for locals and visitors alike.
Origins
The city was first settled in 1788 with the construction of Fort Lee, and formally established in 1794. The discovery of salt brines on the banks of the Kanawha River in the early 1800s led to an industry beginning in 1806. Charleston became the world’s largest producer of salt.
West Virginia officially became a state on June 20, 1863, after breaking away from next-door neighbor Virginia during the Civil War. The Mountain State is the only state to be admitted by a presidential proclamation.
Today, with a population of just under 50,000, Charleston is one of the best cities to live in with above-average schools. There’s always something happening nearly every day of the year. Sightseeing in Downtown Charleston is always a great outing.
